South Africa had homelands. Some Maoris are thinking that they can have some sort of sovereignty other than that enjoyed by normal citizenry.
Sure, I'm all in favour of property rights and freedom for people to do what they like without damaging other people or their property, but that doesn't mean a one way taxpayer $$ flow into 'sovereign nations' which do NOT stand on their own feet.
Democracy is a very ugly thing. What would you think if Indians decided slavery was a good idea and imported or created from their own group some slaves. Heck, they could take up cannibalism of slaves - Maoris used to be cannibals. You really think they should be allowed to do what they want on their reservations? Or do you maybe really think that a constitution across the USA including reservations is not all that bad?
The Indians, or Native Americans or whatever the current label is for the indigenous crowd, own the land in fee simple or whatever the expression is there. It's at the whim of the State! Which is at the whim of the mob. If 70% of the mob says change the law, then that's what you get.
The current fad for good-natured apartheid won't succeed any better than the nasty version. Breeding will see to that. Unless they can construct some "Don't breed with aliens or be excommunicated" rules, like the Nazis did to keep the Aryan race pure, it's doomed to failure.
