X did go on to a more general point, Christopher. As for laws: are there really that many more, in proportion to the general population? There are scores of very silly old laws regulating personal behavior still on the books, which are never enforced but which no one wants to take the time to repeal. Some magazine or other (The New Yorker?) used to have a regular feature, listing them. Joan
