Actually no, it's all the religious holy days the Church insisted on people observing. The sabbeth off, of course (off work, that is -- church attendance wasn't work!), and then saints days and other holy days coming out their ears.

Funny how much we denigrate the church today when it seems to me that at one time the church was the protector of individual liberties against monarchial domination. (Joan, how about this thesis?)
