In Mass. the results from graduates of teaching colleges in the state were scandalously bad. Some schools had 50-80 percent of 4-year bachelor-degree programs fail the certification test -- that pretty much any smart 8th grader could pass. If you want to solve many, many problems in our society, the best way is through fixing education. The people we teach are the ones who will be supporting us in our older years. The training we give them is crap -- and crap begets more crap... I agree -- unions have ruined public education. And, sorry, MC, but to get us back to arguing again <g>, doesn't your boy AlBore fit in the education union's pocket? To wit: "100,000 new teachers" to reduce student:teacher ratios when countries with ratios twice as large as the US consistently produce students who fare better...!
