I was definitely talking about quantity / hours of work rather than difficulty. Clearly more physically demanding then. But the source I read many, many years ago indicated that with the requirement of Sundays off and the many holy days and fairs and other things, they actually worked fewer days of the year than modern industrial workers. Do you recall anything on this from your student days? You should, since they were only a few years ago! <g>
