I don't have an exact answer with regard to payments, if any, to the search engines included in MetaCrawler. My best guess is a contract needs to be signed giving Go2Net permission to include a search engine in MetaCrawler but that there isn't necessarily a fee for either party associated with the contract.

Go2Net has in the past paid Excite a royalty fee for part of the MetaCrawler technology.
