Packers P Josh Bidwell undergoes surgery

GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN (TICKER) -- Josh Bidwell of the Green Bay Packers, the first punter selected in the draft, underwent surgery today to treat suspected testicular cancer, the team disclosed tonight.

Bidwell, who was the only punter in camp, was a fourth-round selection of the Packers. The team is unsure of how long it will be without the rookie from Oregon.

"Diagnosis and prognosis will be forthcoming," Packers general manager Ron Wolf said. "We will make information known when it becomes available to us."

Bidwell was coming off his most impressive outing of the preseason, averaging 43.5 yards on six punts against New Orleans on Saturday.

To replace Bidwell, Green Bay claimed first-year punter Chris Hanson off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. The Packers conclude their exhibition season Thursday against Miami.
