Dan,

It's subjective, I've seen it called as little as 500K machines per quarter - or about 2% of the market.

The numbers in my post were from IDC or Dataquest, I don't remember which. But they weren't subjective since these guys spend a lot of money to measure the market (since people pay them a lot of money to report the "right" answers).

I'll keep looking for it, then repost it.

Incidentally, don't get confused by the reports that only cover the Retail market. Retail reports show a very high skew toward the $399 computer, but Retail accounts for only a small portion of the market these days (I saw one study that said only 10% of the overall market). Business to business, and direct electronic sales are the largest channels.

Businesses are more careful about PC purchases these days since they've learned how quickly PC's depreciate.

Ask pompsander about this. Businesses actually tend to buy higher-end systems because it's expensive in lost time and productivity to replace systems. You're better off spending another $500 for a slightly more powerful system that will last a year longer. You qualify the high-end system, then follow it down the price curve for a little longer as well before you have to go through another qualification.

Pomp, anything to add?

Dave
