Gore Blasts Quality Of Education In Bush's Texas SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Vice President Al Gore attacked the quality of public education in Texas Wednesday during a campaign stop in the home state of Republican presidential front-runner George W. Bush.
Gore, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, told students at aging and decrepit David Crockett Elementary School in San Antonio that there had been a ''massive education failure in Texas.''
He said test scores in the state were among the lowest in the nation, the dropout rate too high and the education infrastructure in need of repair.
''Faced with the situation where in states like Texas, 40 percent of students who are going to college are not prepared for college, and where three out of four schools are in desperate need of repair, how can you say that we've got this money that could be used to address the problem, but let's blow it on a risky tax scheme instead?'' he asked.
Students and teachers told Gore that the air conditioning and electricity at Crockett, named for the Texas hero at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, often go off and Tuesday a flood caused by a broken sewer pipe forced the evacuation of many students.
One student complained that the ''air is so bad, sometimes we can't breathe.''
''Many of our schools have books in the libraries which talk about the Soviet Union, and predict that someday man will land on the moon,'' Gore said.
