I think the Star Division thing is great, but for overall impact on SUNW my votes are for Java, Jini, and UltraSPARC III first silicon.

Java and Jini were terrific in the abstract. This is special though because it's a lot of things coming together over what might otherwise be a small thing. They come together to form that single moment where Sun breaks to where it's been wanting to for so long, and that's 'software'.

Linux comes into focus. Java comes into focus. The two come together. It's the Webtop. It's apparent that the old order is going to be displaced. It's really happening. One gets the sense that Sun is executing it's *whole vision flawlessly, and that the street and the rest of the world is hip to this. It all comes home as it comes home to the PC desktop.

The behemoth 'suite' is brought home in all major platforms, in all major languages and given away gratis with source access and at once given to being a web service like email, in a new model that allows AT&T or AOL to become the next Microsoft.

There's only two things most of us use these PCs for. Neither one of them is going to be sold to us by Microsoft outside of MSN, but rather Ma Bell and the ISPs. That started 9(nine)/1.

We still need the Solitaire thing, however. :)
