A more objective article was forwarded to me:

CADENCE vs. AVANT - ROUND 1 A TIE
A U.S. District Court ruled against Cadence's request to bar
sales of Avant's ArcCell place and route products (Cadence has
filed suit alleging that Avant built the P&R software with stolen
Cadence code), on the grounds that it would endanger Avant's
survival. The judge however also ruled against two key components of Avant's defence strategy: That a 1994 agreement with Cadence forgave everything that happened; and that the 1996 clean room procedure removed "similar" source code (the judge ruled it was inadequate).

[Here's my read of what will happen - Avant will completely rewrite the ArcCell code - it is getting dated and it is about time a new object oriented (the hot new buzzwords) version was available. Then, no matter how the lawsuit goes, the impact on Avant's product offerings would be minimal. This lawsuit is costing both companies a lot of money and I wouldn't be surprised if a settlement was reached - Cadence will not be able to drive Avant out of business and Avant can't afford to have a cloud hanging over its head.]
