Unipart and Vodafone in double deal
Telecommunications giant Vodafone Airtouch (LSE: VOD.L - news) and privately-owned distributor Unipart today announced two independent deals worth a total of œ176 million, writes James Mclean.
Vodafone Distribution said it would spend about œ51 million acquiring UniqueAir, a wholly-owned unit of Unipart, which sells handsets in a chain of shops in the South-East.

About 70% of the handsets currently sold through UniqueAir outlets are connected to the Vodafone network. Unipart said the sale was necessary to secure its subsidiary's future. Unique-Air has 291,000 customers.

Unipart said it had secured a separate five-year logistics deal worth œ125 million to store and deliver Vodafone UK mobile handsets and accessories.

The contract begins today and is geared to upgrading Vodafone's delivery and distribution operations ahead of an expected surge in mobile sales in the run-up to Christmas. Unipart said it was not working on any other deals with Vodafone.
