Ed, S&P futures are ugly. I've given up on volume as a useful indicator. But I think Advances and Declines on the NYA are particularly useful. I'm using a weighted average and testing it against price data. It currently gives a sell signal as of July 16, 1999.

I just tested it during 1987 and it gave a sell signal during the crash. The only problem with it is the potential for whipsaw -- which is the problem with most technical indicators.

During a time space of 3 years it gave 12 sets of buy/sell signals.
