Shares in Philips Electronics NV, Nokia Oyj AB, Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., weren't helped by late news reports in Tokyo that they're jointly planning to standardize the format for interactive digital broadcasting in Europe.

According to a report by Japan's Nikkei news service, the four plan to standardize the format for interactive digital broadcasting in Europe. The news could challenge another move for a standard format based on Microsoft Corp. (MSFT: news, msgs) technology, initiated by Japan and the U.S. See Press Briefings
