Weekly Jobless Claims = +4k to 289k

In the week ending Aug. 28, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 289,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 285,000. The 4-week moving average was 286,500, an increase of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 284,500.

Factory Orders for July = +2.1%

New orders for manufactured goods in July increased $7.3 billion or 2.1 percent to $358.5 billion, the Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census reported today. This follows a 0.8 percent June increase and is the eleventh increase in the last fourteen months.

Q2 Productivity = +0.8%

The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor today reported revised productivity data--as measured by output per hour of all persons--for the second quarter of 1999. The seasonally adjusted annual rates of productivity change in the second quarter were:
0.8 percent in the business sector and
0.6 percent in the nonfarm business sector.


Unit labor costs, which reflect changes in both hourly compensation and productivity, accelerated from a 1.1-percent rise in the first quarter of 1999 to a 4.5-percent growth rate in the second quarter.
