Red Hat to set up Japan subsidiary

Compiled by CBS MarketWatch

TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Red Hat Inc. (RHAT: news, msgs) plans to set up a wholly owned subsidiary in Japan by the end of September. The leading seller of packaged Linux freeware cancelled its agency contract with Itsutsubashi Research Co. on Aug. 26. Red Hat expects the new subsidiary to sort out its jumbled Japanese operations. It hopes to bring to market a 10,000-yen update of the operating system by early October. The release was up in the air for some time due to the contract cancellation. Itsutsubashi has announced plans to release a Linux system under its own brand on Sept. 17. The company claims the contract problems stemmed from management confusion at the U.S. firm. It also cited Red Hat's declining market shares in Europe and South America. Nihon Keizai Shimbun
