Bearcub, I didn't answer your question before because I was not sure what you were asking. But since you've asked a second time I'll take a stab at it.

If you're asking me what I think it would take to get a polly to "see the light" before the fact, I'd say it would take a warning by the Federal government and/or a critical mass of respected authorities communicating via prominent placement in the major media. In practical terms, that would mean the Sunday morning talk shows, the Nightly News with Jim Lehrer, etc. all featuring panelists who are unanimous in their view that people need to prepare. When we see Bill Gates, Dr. Koop, Gen. Colin Powell, and Koskinen on with Jim Lehrer articulating an unequivocal and serious message, that would work. (Of course, it would also create a whole new set or problems.)

After the fact, a polly might concede you were right if the fallout is widespread and greater than hurricane/snowstorm intensity. The average Joe would probably enjoy a couple of days extended vacation from work in January even if he can't watch football on TV.

That's just my guess. I think the major obstacle in getting a consensus on the doomer view has been that the mainstream media treated it as either a contained technical/business issue or a fringe issue.
