Worldwide Semiconductor Global Sales $11.55 Billion for July; Asia Pacific and Japan Markets Boost Industry Growth
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 1999--Worldwide sales of semiconductors were $11.55 billion in July, up 19.3% from 1998's July's totals, as reported by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA). The Asia and Japan markets led the upturn with the Asia Pacific market nearing a 30% increase over last year.
"July's global sales continued the robust growth that began in mid-1998," said George Scalise, SIA President.
The year-to-year chip sales exhibited dramatic growth in the Japan and Asia markets with 24.8% and 29.2% increases, respectively. The Americas market remained strong with sales increasing 18% over last year. Europe's sales increased 6.3% from July 1998.
PC units sales are remaining strong and driving higher microprocessor sales. Flash memory and digital signal processing, used for communication applications, continue to show double-digit growth.
The SIA's Global Sales Report (GSR) is a three month rolling average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, which represent some 70 companies.
The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry and has represented US-based manufacturers since 1977. SIA member companies compromise more than 90 percent of US-based semiconductor production. Collectively, the chip industry employs a domestic workforce of 276,000 people.
