Jihad Vs McWorld:E-Phoria Is No Panacea For The Poor,opines Ramjee Chandran

One of the most incisive commentaries in recent times on the "New World Order" is a book by Benjamin Barber called 'Jihad Vs McWorld'.

Despite its title, the book is less about the centuries-old conflict between Islam and Christianity than a description of the conflict between tradition (Jihad) and tradition (McWorld).

At the risk of over-simplification, Barber writes that while technology is breaking down boundaries, societies are becoming increasingly insular and two are parallel lines which, of course, will never meet. (But oversimplification is a useful tool and one must employ it as often as possible.)

"Insular" also means "parochial", "ethnocentric" and "decidedly narrow-minded". Therefore, it follows that while thought can be more easily transmitted across groups of people, these people will be less receptive to the unfettered flow of ideas....
