Dan Dorfman makes comment on COMS activity today:

3Com Shares, Volume Humming

3Com (COMS) shares are bucking today's falling market, rising 1 7/8 to 26 5/8, on a turnover of more than 7.7 million shares. Average daily volume over the past 13 weeks is 4.7 million shares.

Two unconfirmed stories making the Wall Street rounds appear to be responsible for today's rise:

—A recurring rumor that Lucent Technologies (LU), 63 1/16, will buy the company.

—3Com will spin off one of its fastest growing revenue producers—its market-leading PalmPilot electronic organizer business, which accounts for about 10% of 3Com's annual sales of $5.7 billion.

3Com declined comment and Lucent was not immediately available
