CDPD for Signal Control! An alternative that will become increasingly useful in pre-emptive traffic signal control is CDPD. This is essentially digital over cellular. It differs from the usual calls made by individuals in that the channel is left open continuously throughout the day. The digital signals are sent during the breaks and gaps between voice communications. The cost is much less than standard cellular calls. What this means is that you can now communicate continuously with vehicles while they are moving. Among many other things, like package delivery or pickup (i.e. Fedex), the vehicle can report things like its GPS location. Messages can also be sent from a central office to the remote vehicle. Or all of this can be tied together into an intelligent traffic signal management system. This is the next project for ZSON. It's not announced yet, but you heard it here first. ZSON will use CDPD as another method of determining whether an emergency vehicle is "on siren" and desires signal priority. It will then control the signals to ensure the fastest and safest passage of that vehicle.
