As I see it, many of the children in today's schools are not at all prone to violence. There are virtually no fights whatsoever in my school and no one has been stuffed in a locker. The schools of my parents generation seem to have been more violent that the schools of today, on average.
Unfortunately there are both children and adults in our society who are violent people. In schools, there is simply no way to weed these people out. The only real solution to violence in schools, as I see it, is to greatly restrict access to weapons. That is the only way to really see that something like Columbine doesn't happen again. As for the bombs, I cannot see how a person smart enough to build a bomb that works would want to do so. I hope that no one in my school has had time enough to become disillusioned enough to want to do something like that.
FYI, I have noticed that the response of many schools in Virginia at least has been to concentrate on security of threats from the outside, not the inside. Our school doors are locked during the day, but no attempt has been done to try to identify violent students.
