Stock buybacks can also be viewed as a statement that the company has no productive uses in the company's operating businesses for the assets used to buy back stock. In other words, reducing the assets in the business is viewed as a better way to increase return on invested assets than is employing those assets in the company's businesses. Fast growing businesses do not typically buy back stock.
