Events that trigger a 'massive' upward move in gold could hurt silver in the industrial sense. Then silver can adapt its role and become a precious metal and accompany gold on the upswing. The Comex inventory would vanish at that point because the value is relatively small, suitable for industrial purposes but insufficient for investor demand when it strikes. And industrial demand wouldn't vanish, it would just fall back somewhat. Gold and silver part paths during price declines with silver clinging to its industrial demand base and finding support whereas gold runs into...ah, see GPM thread <g>.
