To Vendors Early

Story 1265 (INTC-D, INTC, SUNW, I/CPM, I/CPR, I/SEM, N/DJN, N/DJWI, N/HIY...) PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Sun Microsystems Inc. Wednesday said it plans an early access release of its Solaris Operating Environment for Intel Corp.'s IA-64 Architecture this fall to key independent software vendors.

Sun Microsystems (SUNW) said vendors can develop and test 64-bit applications on the Solaris system, allowing their customers to take advantage of Intel's IA-64 architecture when it ships in 2000. The Solaris system will also be compatible with Intel's Merced platform.

Chip maker Intel (INTC) unveiled both Merced and its new Internet Exchange architecture at its developer's forum, being held this week in Palm Springs. Sun Microsystems, which makes hardware and software for establishing intranets and expanding the Internet, said it will demonstrate Solaris running on the IA-64 simulator system at the forum.
