RESEARCH ALERT - About.com raised to buy

NEW YORK, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Bear Stearns analyst Scott Ehrens said Thursday he raised his rating on Internet media company About.com Inc. (Nasdaq:BOUT - news) to buy from attractive.

-- Shares of About.com were up 3 at 35-1/2 in morning trading on the Nasdaq stock market.

-- Ehrens said he was upgrading About.com based on the belief that About.com's ``second generation' Internet model has established early signs of proof of concept, evidenced by strong audience growth and growth in targeted ad sales.

-- About.com's network of sites recorded 13.1 percent reach in July, jumping three spots to become the 17th most visited site on the Web.

-- He said the company's home page is now the No. 1 site among all news, information and entertainment domains sites, surpassing Ziff-Davis' ZDNet (NYSE:ZDZ - news) and MSNBC.com.

-- A significant deal with CMP Media, which will provide content to About.com's computing/technology channels, and another with CNN's Web sites, where About.com will have a fixed position on all CNN.com Web pages, will be an important source of advertising revenue.
