AMD aims for 30% MPU market share in Japan by 2001

TOKYO (CBS.MW) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. plans to increase its share of the Japanese market for microprocessors for personal computers to slightly more than 30 percent by 2001, Rob Herb, AMD senior vice president and co-chief marketing executive, told the Nihon Keizai Shimbun in an interview. The Sunnyvale, California chipmaker (AMD: news, msgs) currently has about 20 percent of the Japanese market with its MPU, designed mostly for low-end PCs, but the firm will introduce more sophisticated MPUs for high-end PCs to catch up with Intel Corp.
