Greg, re:why no Athlon MB's
Here's some reasons:
1. In the short term, the first MB was supposed to be MSI, but a problem related to cold boot was found at the last moment. I don't know the details.
2. The Intel conspiracy theory -- this theory says that Intel invented a shortage of chipsets and then threatened MB makers who made any Athlon boards with reduced chipset availability. (personally, I believe the latter part but not the former)
3. AMD expected VIA to ramp up their southbridge part of the chipset faster than they did. Could be because of the NSM and IDTI deals. Then again, why do all the Athlon MB's have an AMD northbridge and a VIA southbridge? Was a problem discovered in the AMD southbridge at the last moment?
4. Some of the chipset pairs are committed to (i.e., in warehouses of) a Tier 1 mfgr who is making their own motherboard. But that company experienced delays in making their own motherboards.
