Michael, you've raised some thoughtworthy points. However, I question whether women are as prone to work it out in PMs rather than on the public threads as you seem to think.

I find that they tend to use both forms of communication to avoid abusing each other while they discuss an issue. As you note: Men engaged in verbal banter or dialogue with only men, normally get ruder and insulting much quicker. Especially when they have strongly held differing political or philisophical views. Most of the women on this thread try to stick to the issue, even while they are gritting their teeth with disagreement.

However, there is a good deal of dry humor and appreciation of dry humor in the women's postings as well. Smileys are not required, although <VBG> or some variant is used when the humor is so dry that it could be mistaken for a stiletto in the ribs.

P.S. I feel left out of the sorority of people who call 'em as they see 'em. <g>
