I don't see anything appalling about believing in the possibility, nay extreme probability, of discovering intelligent life on other planets.

Reversing time's arrow and alternate universes are significantly more fringe beliefs, but with the visual evidence of uncountable sun like stars in the currently visible portion of this universe, the recent recognition of multiple non-Solar system planets and the obvious proclivity for carbon based life forms developing on this rather pedestrian planet its a bit of stretch to blindly deny this probability, sort of akin to the historical belief that the earth rested on the back of a rather large tortoise.
