Apple To Unveil Multimedia Box

By Jeff Sweat

CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Apple Computer, looking to regain ground lost to computers using
Intel's MMX capabilities, will unveil Friday a Macintosh that it claims will outperform current
MMX machines. Apple will introduce the Power Mac 6500, the first new product it has
announced since it reorganized on March 14. The minitower machine, aimed at Apple's
smaller businesses and design core audience, will be powered by 225-MHz, 250-MHz,
275-MHz or 300-MHz PowerPC chips.

It will use the same outward design as the Performa 6400, but in line with Apple's efforts to
streamline its products, it will lose the Performa designation.

In addition to speedy processors, Apple has beefed up its 2-D graphics, 3-D graphics, video
and audio capabilities. The 3-D graphics capabilities, for example, are six to 10 times more
powerful than before, while video-capture performance has tripled.

The machine may help shore up Apple's hold on the multimedia market, which has been
threatened since Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., introduced its MMX multimedia architecture.
Apple ran internal tests pitting a 6500/225 Apple against a 200-MHz Pentium MMX box,
and said its computer doubled the multimedia performance of the Intel machine in many cases.

The 6500 will ship with four different software bundles, including two for small businesses.
The 6500/225 and 6500/250 will be available on Friday, while the two higher-end systems
will ship in May. Pricing will range from $2,000 for the 6500/225 to $3,000 for the
6500/300.
