TO ALL: Let's concentrate on the facts I have a J24 sailboat that I race regularly with three other sailors as crew. My most die-hard crewman has a personal style that some find irritating. He questions and challenges many of the strategic and tactical decisions that we make while racing. He forces us to look at the little details and at the big picture from a different angle. His amazing lack of tact is balanced by his good intentions. Whether any particular suggestion or question that he has may or may not be "correct" is not as important as the fact that his challenges force us to continually re-evaluate our thinking. He is often wrong. If that is the case, we have still gained by re-inforcing our knowledge of what works and what doesn't. We are hungry for knowledge to enhance our performance and are open to discussion. We have learned enough about our art of sailboat racing to intelligently make use of the GOOD and filter out the BAD input. Most of the other racers in our fleet don't want this crewman on their boat because they don't have the tolerance to be challenged, right or wrong. On our boat we grow by being challenged. We were the 1996 fleet champions! I welcome ALL the input that this thread is generating and I have learned something from every person who contributes. We all have the intelligence to sift through the "facts" posted here and to process the information as best as we personally can. Even the most heated "arguments" and "virtiual pissing contests" have generated a flurry of further researh confirming or denying various claims made. I will continue to keep an open mind and to study all that I discover here. I hope that some of my fellow GRNO crew will refrain from making personal public attacks on fellow crewman or on the "opposing boat's" crew. We could all benefit if we place PRINCIPLES BEFORE PERSONALITIES. I am grateful to have found this group of winners! Peace
