Agreed. Failure to defend Taiwan would destroy that small vestige of US credibility in the region -- more important failure to defend Taiwan would change the regional confidence and consequently the balance of power vis a vis Japan and South Korea. The political and economic fallout would be a disaster.

PRC's big trump may be devaluation of the yuan.
