Microsoft Working on Set-Top Game Console, Next Generation Says

Redmond, Washington, Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, is developing a set-top game- playing console under the code name X-Box, Next Generation gaming magazine said, citing unnamed sources. The device, which is expected to be primarily for games but may have other functions, will feature a 500 megahertz chip from Intel Corp. or an Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Athlon chip, nVidia Corp.'s NV-10 graphics technology and a modified version of Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. Microsoft declined to comment on the machine, which may be built and sold by computer makers such as Dell Computer Corp. or Gateway Inc., and is planned for release in Fall 2000 for less than $300, said Next Generation, which is owned by Imagine Media Inc.

Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft, the fourth-largest publisher of computer games, last year said it planned to boost by 50 percent its gaming business, which includes the MSN Zone gaming Web site.
