Now (I'm the CFO/COO/CTO talking here), instead of firing you workforce and pairing down benefits and perks when times get rough revenue-wise, how about taking a look at that free Office suite?

Different funny money buckets. While it's all cash to us the bean counters care from which bucket the money is spent. Saving money by getting cheaper software is different than saving money by "right sizing" people, at least in accountant-land.

Hell, the license expense may even come out of the capital budget if they count it as part of the cost of the computer.
