Article: "Telcos' future valuations uncertain"

news.com

"But warning signs in the form of falling per-minute long distance prices and a growing interest in linking the local and long distance networks began in earnest early in the year. For example, AT&T, the biggest and oldest long distance carrier, made a $110 billion bet on providing local telephone service through cable-TV lines by making two major acquisitions."

Is this recent price war for long distance service really a factor in the disastrous two month stock performance of GBLX and QWST? Most of us probably aren't into these stocks because we see long distance voice communication as a growth sector. Plus the public is, I think, bored and confused by the whole long distance price war and the inept way in which almost all the telecos try and market these services to domestic consumers. My personal experience with AT&T, MCIWorldcom and GTE is that these companies are pretty clueless when it comes to selling these integrated "new age" services to people. MCIWorldcom's cold-calling based marketing is simply a nightmare. Audio-terrorism. And while AT&T talks the talk about personal networks, their consumer-level marketing is currently disorganized and I think it will take them two years to integrate these cable acquisitions into a product consumers can understand. Good luck trying to find one person at AT&T customer service who can talk to you about long distance, Internet service and DSL in the same breath. Hope that GBLX and QWST can one day blow these guys completely out of the water. That would be sweet revenge for the all the MCIWorldcom cold calls I have received (although a call to their HQ finally got me off their call list for 2 years). Maybe that fleet of 22 submersible vehicles that GBLX owns via its acquisition of C+W Global Marine can be fitted with torpedoes...
