Here is the whole usenet post FWIW. The links have a NiMH digital camera slant. Some of the retailers probably have laptop batteries too.

Many digital cameras, especially those with LCD display panels, go through batteries at a terrifying rate.
Alkaline batteries perform poorly in this application. With any use the voltage starts to fall, and quickly drops below the level needed to operate many digital cameras. In some applications you may get less than 10 photographs per set of new batteries.
Perhaps the best solution is to use rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, which have a number of advantages over nickel cadmium:
* Greater capacity * Less environmental damage * Greatly reduced "memory effect" * Longer life in typical use

NOTE: There was an early manufacturing problem, since corrected, in the labeling of Eveready Energizer NiMH batteries. These batteries are a bit too large in diameter, which can make it difficult or impossible to use them in a snug battery container. These improperly labeled products were recalled, but some did get into the hands of consumers, most likely through Best Buy. Consumers that have improperly labeled products can obtain replacements by calling the Energizer consumer hotline number (1-800-383-7323), or by sending email to the Customer Support address on the Energizer Website <http://www.energizer.com/companyinfo/>.
