Hmmm... a deep subject.
Benefits to IBM on the surface are those magic watchwords "focus on core business" - IBM sold some network technology which was no longer very profitable for them but valuable to CSCO. These deals rarely actually move many customers directly but CSCO can expect to get the lion's share of future business with IBM's former network products clients because of their market position.

There is a deeper question of what IBM's moves portend long term. IBM certainly has the money to stay with any product for a long time, whether or not it makes money. In the old days they would have kept this business because they wanted a full portfolio, end to end, to offer customers. They will still have that in some lines but not in others.

This lends more credibility to the idea that they might exit the PC business if it does not become profitable.
