All children are scared at least once. At 5, I figured it all out. What I was afraid of was not that lion in the corner but of Death! Sudden, all-consuming death. Dissolution -- the end. I remember standing by my parents' bed demanding an explanation and justification for the dying of my sparrow. I projected it and discovered that life was limited, death was certain, but only the timing was unknown. There was nothing god or anyone could do about it. Human life was finite -- and everyone talked about it but no one did anything about it. I've enjoyed lots of unexpected life extensions. I still think it's a rotten deal. But I was never scared in the dark again. Some day a dark horse is going to ride into camp. One must be booted and spurred to ride it out.
