There was a fireworks display one night, and a kid who was smaller than me kept bugging his mother because he had trouble seeing in the crowd. She got impatient, and after another "Ma, I can't see", she looked down and said in a withering voice, "My heart bleeds for you". It was cruel, but I also had never heard the phrase before, and was enchanted.....
