Thanx NonStick:
Microsoft Corp., the world's largest software maker, is developing a set-top game- playing console under the code name X-Box, Next Generation gaming magazine said, citing unnamed sources. The device, which is expected to be primarily for games but may have other functions, will feature a 500 megahertz chip from Intel Corp. or an Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Athlon chip, nVidia Corp.'s NV-10 graphics technology and a modified version of Microsoft's Windows CE operating system.
Saw this posted somewhere else; good pick-up. No word yet from MSFT, which is playing things very close to the vest. The video game market is dominated with a 90% market share by Sony and Nintendo combined. They are both moving to 128 bit microprocessors and require Rambus Inside. Most people are in awe of the samples exhibited by Sony, a la Toy Story. BTW, it is said that Sony will formally exhibit and announce their Playstation II this month, I think, in Tokyo. The Playstation II is aimed for the Japanese market by Christmas this year, USA next Fall. Nintendo's next gen, Dolphin, should be available next Fall too. With both, Rambus will have crossed the chasm and will have immediately achieved dominance in that niche, ie video games; hence, they will be in the bowling alley.
Other niches occupied by Rambus by this time Y2000 will be high end PCs, workstations, servers, and hopefully laptops. With this series of niches c/w widespread adoption, a tornado could touch down at any time, thereby announcing gorilla-hood.
