NY Stew: A comment: A fine balanced summary of the state of play. I try to follow telecom equip suppliers as closely as I can and very much appreciate both Stockhawk's and your post.

Canada is very instructive as an example IMO. Seems like in Canada both the tel cos and cable cos are doing their best to roll out the most advanced technologies available, no? Why there and not here?

In the US the cable companies and the telcos have been obstructing the introduction of new technologies or at best been uninterested. The cable companies have concentrated on TV delivery not their data opportunity. And the telcos seem to be incabable of anything but protecting their T-1 lines (which they also fought originally).

There are a few signs of life such as those you both cite, and AT&T is experimenting using HLIT in Utah.

So where else to look?

This I why I have looked to means of trying to bypass these bottlenecks.

Wireless fiber is one way for business.

Fiberoptics is moving into metro

Satellite may come in a year or two.

For consumers, don't see anything beyond the excellent run down you have both given - which is gloomy at least in the short run, no?

Do either of you see practical alternatives to the telcos or cable cos - other than makeshifts such a CLECs?
