Alternate way to do the four gallons:

Fill the 5 gallon and pour it off into the 3. The 5 now contains 2 gallons. Empty out the 3 and pour the rest of the 5 into the 3. The 3 now has 2 gallons in it. Fill up the 5 again and pour off 1 gallon into the 3 to fill it up and the 5 gallon jar now has 4 gallons.
