I just love it when I read news like this. Kind-of gives you goose bumps:

Broadcom Chip Enables 12 Leading Networking Vendors to Complete
First Major Gigabit Ethernet Over Copper Interoperability Test

nasdaq-amex.com

IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 3, 1999--

Broadcom's Gigabit Ethernet Copper Transceiver is Ramping into Volume
Production

...

The BCM5400 integrates the entire Gigabit Ethernet and Fast Ethernet (IEEE 802.3u) physical layer
interfaces onto a single monolithic CMOS chip and forms the basis for a complete 10/100/1000 physical
layer solution, including standards-based Auto-Negotiation. The design is based on Broadcom's proprietary
Digital Signal Processing (DSP) architecture, providing a robust, line-rate adaptive, and cost-effective
solution for transmission over a wide range of cable lengths and operating conditions. The device integrates
over 3 million transistors and delivers over 250 billion operations per second (GOPS) of DSP performance.

Broadcom first sampled the BCM5400 to its Accelerated Development Partners in May 1999. It is currently
accepting volume production orders for delivery in October.
