They are achieving worldwide interoperability quickly. CDMA does not offer this yet. Hopefully the Vodaphone acquisition of Airtouch (& maybe BAM) will change this.

Neither CDMA or GSM offers worldwide interoperability, neither are even close. Worldwide interoperability was a dream that GSM IPR holders had until Qualcomm's technology displaced this dream. 99% of cellular phones seldom leave their home service area (my obsevation). Phone rentals, call forwarding and other developments are making interoperability a mute point, or at best a minor consideration for 99% of all subscribers.
