X, in practice, I too am probably a "militant pragmatist," although I usually define myself (with some gritting of teeth) as a liberal. But the problem remains is that pragmatists are constantly reacting to other people's issues.

As you put it:

But it is the party-liners who bring up the issue in the first place! And while the pragmatists sit around in the middle of the field, mulling the issue over, trying to come up with an "informed opinion," the other guys have carried it down the field and scored the touchdown..

What pragmatists have got to do is to sit down BEFORE THE GAME STARTS, mull everything over AHEAD OF TIME, and then anticipate everybody else with good, solid well-reasoned positions on issues that THEY have chosen.

Hey, let's start a new party! The Militant Pragmatist Party!
