RE: While more than half of the tech officers contacted declined to point the finger at potential shorts, the only clear-cut favorite of those who responded was Compaq Computers, with 10 mentions. Between the computer-maker's previous leadership problems and cutthroat competition from direct-seller Dell, the CIOs indicated that Compaq seemed basically rudderless. According to some of their brief responses, the tech execs said that the Houston-based company "was challenged by too many vendors with better cost" and had "no direction."
