Buying puts will limit up losses when compared to a short sale. However, put buying is subject to time deterioration. My preference is short selling giving me the benefit of unlimited time. Along with unlimited time is the potential for unlimited upside losses.

Upside protection is afforded by selling puts which raises basis but limits profit on the short side. Or, you can buy calls to protect a position. Sorry to confuse the issue.
