>>If that's the case, who else will come into Cisco's cross hairs?<<
Well, according to the article you posted, "A number of existing DWDM vendors have brought metro optical products to market in 1999, including Ciena, Nortel, Ericsson, Lucent Technologies and Osicom, while a variety of start-ups including Astral Point, Chromatis Networks, New Access Communications, and Optical Networks Inc., leverage innovations in both the telecom and datacom worlds to optimize solutions for this complex market."
Ciena wants to go it alone, but I think would still have to listen to Chambers if "Cerent"-type money was flashed around.... Osicom I know nothing about, other than knowing Barron's did a negative piece about them a while back...and the start ups could be "Monterey"-like targets I guess (but ones it would be hard to play as an investment, of course.).... MRVC has an optical networking division, but I am not sure where they are with metro DWDM.....Oh, and AFCI has been mentioned as a company wanting to increase its activities in this area as a "spruce-up" before being sold... all just talk though...
