Britain says it wants China in the WTO

LONDON, Sept 5 (Reuters) - British Trade Minister Richard Caborn said on Sunday he wanted to see China in the World Trade Organisation because Beijing had a major role to play in ensuring long-term strength and stability in the global economy.

Caborn made the comments in a statement as he prepared to leave for a six-day visit to China beginning on Monday.

SYDNEY, Sept 6 - After a year ruined by a spectacular military blunder and political miscalculations, U.S. President Bill Clinton and Chinese President Jiang Zemin meet in New Zealand next week to try to patch up ties.

. . .it is widely expected they will announce an instruction to their trade officials to try to hustle through an agreement to meet a tight Congressional deadline and secure China's membership this year.
